Mental Health Support Worker Job Description

This vital role involves providing compassionate, person-centred support to individuals experiencing a range of mental health conditions within residential, community, or supported living settings in Reading RG2. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, which may include Registered Nurses (RGN/RMN), social workers, and other Healthcare Assistants, to deliver a high standard of care that promotes recovery, independence, and well-being. Your day-to-day work will be dynamic and rewarding, focused on building trusting relationships and empowering service users to manage their health and achieve their personal goals.

HireNow partners with a variety of esteemed healthcare providers across Reading, from NHS trusts to private care organisations. By applying through us, you gain access to a curated selection of roles that are often filled before being publicly advertised. We handle the legwork, from vetting employers to negotiating pay, so you can focus on what you do best—providing exceptional support. If you're also exploring other care roles, we frequently have Nursery Nurse and Casual Labourer positions, but this specific opportunity is for those with a passion for mental health.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

  • Providing Direct Personal & Emotional Support: Assist service users with daily living activities in a way that promotes dignity and independence. Offer empathetic listening, emotional reassurance, and practical support during times of distress or crisis, implementing de-escalation techniques where necessary.
  • Implementing Care & Support Plans: Work closely under the guidance of Registered Nurses (RMN) and senior staff to follow individualised care plans. This includes supporting with medication administration (as per competency), monitoring mental and physical health, and accurately recording observations in line with policy.
  • Facilitating Therapeutic Activities & Social Integration: Encourage and support service users to engage in therapeutic group activities, hobbies, and community integration. This could involve accompanying individuals to appointments, social events, or facilitating in-house workshops to develop life skills.
  • Promoting a Safe & Positive Environment: Maintain a clean, safe, and therapeutic living environment. This duty shares some core principles with roles like a Cleaning Operative in its attention to hygiene and safety, but is specifically focused on creating a calming and recovery-focused space for mental health service users.
  • Team Collaboration & Communication: Participate effectively in handovers, team meetings, and multi-disciplinary reviews. Provide clear, concise, and timely feedback to nurses, managers, and other Healthcare Assistants regarding any changes in a service user’s condition or needs.
  • Upholding Safeguarding & Professional Standards: Protect vulnerable adults by adhering to all safeguarding protocols, maintaining strict confidentiality, and working within the boundaries of the Mental Capacity Act and other relevant legislation. Report any concerns promptly and appropriately.

Essential Skills & Requirements

Experience & Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a Mental Health Support Worker, Healthcare Assistant, or in a similar caring role within a mental health setting.
  • A relevant NVQ/Diploma in Health & Social Care (Level 2 or 3) is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of mental health conditions, recovery models, and trauma-informed care.
  • Valid, up-to-date training in Safeguarding Adults, Moving & Handling, and Basic Life Support.

Personal Attributes

  • Exceptional empathy, patience, and resilience.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with service users, families, and clinical teams.
  • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • A genuine passion for supporting others and a commitment to anti-discriminatory practice.
