Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Got questions about becoming an Exam Invigilator in Manchester with HireNow? Find quick answers below.
While previous invigilation experience is highly desirable and often leads to a higher pay rate, it is not always essential. We provide comprehensive training on JCQ regulations and site-specific procedures. We value transferable skills more: reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to follow strict protocols. Experience in other supervised, regulated environments (e.g., healthcare, security, administration) is a strong advantage.
Shifts are predominantly during the main exam seasons (May-June and November-January). A typical exam day might involve a morning session (8:30 am arrival for a 9:30 am start, finishing around 12:30 pm) and/or an afternoon session (12:30 pm arrival for a 1:30 pm start, finishing around 4:30 pm). Shifts are usually between 3 to 5 hours in length. You can specify your availability (mornings only, full days, specific weekdays) and we will match you accordingly. The work is ad-hoc and not guaranteed every day, but busy periods offer high frequency.
Yes, in many cases. If you are subscribed to the DBS Update Service and your certificate is at the correct level (usually an Enhanced DBS for working with children), we can perform a status check for a fee, which is often faster than applying for a brand new one. If you are not on the Update Service or your certificate is over 3 years old, HireNow will facilitate a new Enhanced DBS application for you. All costs for new checks required for the role are covered by HireNow.
Absolutely. Many schools prefer to recruit permanent or term-time-only invigilators from a pool of proven temporary staff. Excelling in a temporary assignment through HireNow significantly increases your chances of being offered a direct contract by the school. We also have a wide network; strong performance in one school can lead to referrals to others. For more on this career path, watch our video: which covers turning temporary jobs into permanent positions.
Smart, business-casual attire is required. This typically means trousers/skirt, a collared shirt/blouse, and smart shoes (no trainers). The key is to appear professional, approachable, and authoritative. Avoid overly casual clothing like jeans, t-shirts, or loud patterns. Some schools may provide a lanyard or identification badge. It's always best to err on the side of formality, especially for your first shift at a new venue.
