Stock Controller Job Description
This pivotal Stock Controller role based in Preston PR1 places you at the operational heart of a major distribution centre for a nationally recognised retail and logistics brand. You will be responsible for maintaining impeccable inventory accuracy, coordinating inbound and outbound stock movements, and providing crucial data to support supply chain efficiency. The client is known for investing in their staff and offers a clear progression path for individuals who demonstrate reliability and initiative.
At HireNow, we specialise in connecting skilled professionals like Property Maintenance Operatives, warehouse staff, and inventory specialists with businesses that value their expertise. Unlike generic job boards, we provide a personalised service. Our local Preston consultants understand the specific demands of the logistics sector in the North West. By applying through us, you gain access to exclusive roles, pre-interview guidance, and ongoing support throughout your assignment. Think of us as your career partner, not just a recruitment agency.
Whether you're seeking an immediate start or a long-term career shift, this role offers both. We also have a variety of other urgent positions available across the region, including Maintenance Technician roles in Burnley and Stock Replenisher positions in nearby areas, showcasing the breadth of opportunities we manage.
As the successful Stock Controller, your day-to-day duties will be diverse and critical to operational success. You will be expected to:
-
1Conduct Daily Stock Audits & Cycle Counts:
Perform systematic physical inventory checks using handheld RFID scanners and warehouse management systems (WMS) to verify system data against actual stock levels, identifying and reconciling any discrepancies immediately.
-
2Manage Inbound & Outbound Logistics:
Oversee the receipt of goods, ensuring accurate PO matching, and coordinate the dispatch process. You will be responsible for organising stock in designated locations (picking faces, bulk storage) to optimise picking efficiency and space utilisation.
-
3Generate & Analyse Inventory Reports:
Produce daily and weekly reports on stock levels, turnover rates, and slow-moving items. Your analysis will directly inform purchasing decisions and help minimise stockouts or overstock situations, contributing to cost savings.
-
4Maintain Health & Safety & Housekeeping Standards:
Ensure all stock is stored safely and securely, adhering to weight limits and COSHH regulations where applicable. You will play a key role in maintaining a clean, tidy, and hazard-free warehouse environment, conducting regular safety checks.
-
5Liaise with Internal Teams & External Suppliers:
Act as the central point of contact for inventory queries from the sales, procurement, and warehouse operations teams. You will also communicate with suppliers regarding delivery schedules and investigate any shipment discrepancies.
To excel in this Preston-based Stock Controller position, our client is looking for candidates who possess the following skills and attributes:
-
Proven Experience in a Similar Stock/Inventory Role:
Minimum of 2 years' hands-on experience in a warehouse or distribution centre environment, with a demonstrable track record of maintaining high inventory accuracy (99%+). Experience with WMS such as SAP, Oracle, or similar is highly advantageous.
-
Numeracy & IT Proficiency:
Strong numerical skills for data analysis and reporting. Must be confident using Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs) and comfortable learning new proprietary software systems. Meticulous attention to detail is non-negotiable.
-
Excellent Communication & Organisational Skills:
Ability to communicate clearly with colleagues at all levels, both verbally and in writing. Must be a self-starter with exceptional organisational skills, capable of prioritising a varied workload in a fast-paced setting.
-
Flexibility & Forklift License (Desirable):
Willingness to work occasional overtime during peak periods. A valid Counterbalance (B1) or Reach (B2) Forklift Licence is not essential but would be a significant advantage and could command a higher pay rate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Your primary focus will be on inventory accuracy. A typical day involves starting with a review of the previous day's dispatches and receipts. You'll then conduct scheduled cycle counts of specific product lines, using a handheld scanner to verify quantities against the Warehouse Management System (WMS). You'll process any goods received, checking them against purchase orders and logging them into the system. You'll generate reports on stock levels, investigate any discrepancies, and work with the picking team to ensure location accuracy. You'll also be responsible for quarantining any damaged stock and raising requests for replenishment from bulk storage. It's a role that blends physical checking with data analysis and system updates.
Absolutely. While the products are different, the core skills are highly transferable. As a Laundry Attendant / Operative, you are already experienced in processing, sorting, and tracking specific items (linen, uniforms) through a system, ensuring nothing is lost and everything meets quality standards. This directly parallels stock control, where you track inventory through receipt, storage, and dispatch. Your attention to detail, ability to follow processes, and responsibility for handling goods are all valuable assets. On your CV and in interview, focus on these procedural and organisational similarities. We also have specific Casual Labourer roles that might suit your background.
Very high. This is a genuine temp-to-perm position. The client uses the initial 12-week period to assess cultural fit and performance in a real-world setting. For candidates who demonstrate reliability, accuracy, and a positive team attitude, the transition to a permanent contract is the expected outcome. The client views this as an efficient way to recruit dedicated staff. We strongly recommend watching our video guide "How to Turn a Temporary Job into a Permanent Position" (linked in the sidebar) for strategies to maximise your chances. Historically, over 80% of candidates placed in similar temp-to-perm Stock Controller roles with this client have been offered permanent positions.
Yes, this client is known for promoting from within. A successful Stock Controller can progress into roles such as Senior Stock Controller, Inventory Manager, or Warehouse Team Leader. The skills you develop—data analysis, system expertise, process improvement—are foundational for logistics management careers. Furthermore, the experience gained is highly valued across sectors, from retail logistics to manufacturing. For those interested in different environments, skills in inventory control can also be applicable in settings requiring a Property Maintenance Operative who manages materials and parts inventories, or even administrative roles like Remote Receptionist positions that require strong organisational skills.
This specific role requires a full-time commitment due to its integral position within the team. However, HireNow frequently has part-time and flexible warehouse and admin positions available in the Preston area that could better suit someone juggling multiple roles like Exam Invigilator work. We recommend registering your details with us on our Looking For Work page and specifying your availability. Our consultants can then match you with suitable opportunities, whether they are seasonal, term-time only, or flexible shift work, similar to the opportunities we outline in our guide for Festive Temp Jobs.
Stop Searching. Start Your New Role in Preston.
