Job Description: Laundry Attendant / Operative

HireNow is recruiting for an experienced and reliable Laundry Attendant / Operative to join the team at a high-volume, modern laundry facility in the heart of London EC2. This is a pivotal role supporting the hospitality and healthcare sectors, ensuring the smooth operation of linen services for prestigious clients across the capital. We're looking for individuals who take pride in maintaining impeccable standards of cleanliness and efficiency.

Successful candidates will be offered an immediate temporary contract with a strong view to becoming permanent for the right person. This role is ideal for someone seeking stable work in a fast-paced environment, with the added benefit of working with a leading London recruitment agency that values its staff. Your Day-to-Day Duties

  • 1 Operate and monitor industrial washing machines, dryers, and ironing/folding machinery safely and efficiently, following strict health & safety and COSHH guidelines.
  • 2 Sort, weigh, and load linen (bed sheets, towels, uniforms, kitchen linens, healthcare textiles) according to fabric type, colour, and soiling level, ensuring proper separation.
  • 3 Perform quality checks on all processed items, identifying and reporting any stains, damage, or wear and tear before packing or dispatching.
  • 4 Maintain a clean, tidy, and organised work area, including regular cleaning of machines and work surfaces to meet high hygiene standards.
  • 5 Accurately fold, pack, and prepare cleaned linen for delivery or collection, ensuring orders are complete and labelled correctly. This role requires a similar level of diligence and systematic approach as a Mortuary Porter or a Refuse / Waste Operative, focusing on process and hygiene.
  • 6 Work effectively as part of a team to meet daily production targets and respond to urgent requests from clients in a timely manner.

What We're Looking For

  • A Proven Experience: Previous work as a Laundry Attendant, Operative, or in a similar role within hospitality, healthcare, or an industrial setting is highly advantageous.
  • B Physical Fitness & Stamina: The role involves standing for long periods, lifting sacks of linen, and repetitive movements. Good physical health is essential.
  • C Reliability & Punctuality: A can-do attitude, excellent timekeeping, and a commitment to showing up for your scheduled shifts are non-negotiable.
  • D Attention to Detail & Pride in Work: A keen eye for spotting stains or damage and a genuine pride in delivering clean, perfectly presented linen.
  • E Team Player: Ability to communicate well with colleagues and supervisors in a busy, sometimes noisy environment.
  • F Right to Work: Must have valid proof of right to work in the UK. Training on specific machinery can be provided for the right candidate.

A Closer Look: The Life of a Laundry Operative in Central London

Beyond the Basics: The Impact of Your Work

While the core duties involve machinery and linen, this role is a critical support function for London's service economy. The laundry processed in an EC2 facility directly impacts the guest experience in five-star hotels, the hygiene standards in private healthcare clinics, and the professional presentation in corporate offices. A single missed stain or a batch of improperly folded linen can disrupt an entire client operation.

Operatives often develop specialist knowledge, learning the specific protocols for healthcare isolation linen, the precise fold for a luxury hotel's napkin, or the correct temperature for delicate chef jackets. This isn't just washing clothes; it's providing an essential, behind-the-scenes service that keeps key London industries running smoothly and professionally.

Case Study Insight: One of our long-term operatives, Sarah, now a Shift Supervisor, identified a recurring minor fault in an ironer's thermostat during her quality checks. Her proactive report prevented a major breakdown during a peak hotel turnover period, saving the client significant downtime. This highlights how attentiveness in this role leads to real value.

"I was nervous about temp work, but HireNow got me a start in two days. My consultant, Mark, calls every fortnight without fail. When I wanted more hours, he had me lined up for overtime the next week."

— James, Laundry Operative (EC2), placed August 2024

Maximising Your EC2 Location: Transport, Amenities & Cost

Prime Central London Access

The EC2 postcode is exceptionally well-connected. Facilities are typically a short walk from major transport hubs like Liverpool Street, Moorgate, and Bank.

  • Multiple Tube Lines (Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City)
  • National Rail Services at Liverpool Street
  • Extensive Bus Routes & Cycle Superhighways

Managing Living & Travel Costs

We provide practical advice for operatives working in Central London. While travel costs are a factor, the higher hourly rate compared to outer-London roles often offsets this.

  • Consider Travelcards vs. Contactless Capping
  • Many facilities offer staff kitchen/break areas to save on lunch costs
  • Explore flexible start times to avoid peak travel fares

On-Site & Local Amenities

Modern laundry facilities in EC2 are designed with staff welfare in mind. Furthermore, you're at the heart of one of the world's most dynamic cities.

  • Clean locker rooms, showers, and rest areas
  • Proximity to Smithfield Market, Spitalfields, and countless lunch options
  • Easy access to banks, shops, and services after your shift

Working in EC2 offers not just a job, but a true London work experience with all the conveniences and opportunities of the city centre at your doorstep. The logistical advantages are a significant perk of this specific role.
