Stock Controller Job Description: Tilbury RM18

Our client, a major logistics and distribution operator based at the Port of Tilbury, requires a diligent and proactive Stock Controller to join their busy warehouse team. This role is central to their supply chain operations, ensuring inventory accuracy, managing stock movements, and supporting efficient order fulfilment for a range of retail and industrial clients. The successful candidate will be a key player in a fast-paced environment where attention to detail and process adherence are paramount.

By applying through HireNow, you're not just applying for a single job; you're gaining access to our network of local employers in Tilbury RM18 and across Essex. We specialise in connecting skilled logistics and warehouse personnel with businesses that value reliability and expertise. Whether you're looking for an immediate start as a Stock Controller, considering a role as a Factory Operative, or exploring other logistics positions, our dedicated consultants work to match your skills with the right opportunity. For a broader view of available roles, visit our Find Jobs portal.

This position offers more than just a temporary role; it's a gateway to a stable career within a growing sector. The client has a strong history of converting temporary staff who demonstrate commitment and skill into permanent members of their team. We understand the local job market intimately, and our role is to facilitate a smooth, professional hiring process for both candidates and employers, as detailed in our resource Looking For Work.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

  • Inventory Management: Conduct daily cycle counts, full stock takes, and maintain 99.5%+ accuracy in the Warehouse Management System (WMS). Reconcile physical stock with system data and investigate any discrepancies immediately.
  • Stock Movement Coordination: Oversee the receipt, storage, and dispatch of goods. Liaise with the loading bay team, forklift drivers, and Factory Operative staff to ensure smooth inbound and outbound logistics. Process GRNs (Goods Received Notes) and dispatch documentation.
  • Quality Control & Reporting: Perform visual checks on incoming and stored goods for damage or expiry. Generate daily and weekly stock reports on inventory levels, slow-moving items, and potential shortages for the management team.
  • System Administration: Proficiently use the company's WMS (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or similar) to update records, create pick lists, and manage stock locations. Assist in training new team members on system protocols.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure all stock handling and storage practices adhere to strict health & safety regulations, including COSHH for any hazardous materials. Maintain a clean, tidy, and organised warehouse environment.
  • Problem-Solving: Proactively identify issues such as stock discrepancies, potential bottlenecks in the picking process, or inefficient storage layouts. Propose and help implement practical solutions.

What We're Looking For: Ideal Candidate Profile

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven Experience: Minimum of 1-2 years in a stock control, inventory, or warehouse clerk role, preferably within a fast-moving logistics or manufacturing environment.
  • IT & System Literacy: Strong competency with MS Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs) and experience with a modern Warehouse Management System (WMS).
  • Numeracy & Attention to Detail: Excellent numerical skills and a meticulous eye for detail, essential for accurate stock counting and data entry.

Personal Attributes

  • Communication & Teamwork: Ability to communicate clearly with colleagues at all levels, from warehouse Factory Operative staff to management. A collaborative and helpful attitude.
  • Initiative & Problem-Solving: A proactive mindset, able to work independently, prioritise tasks, and resolve day-to-day issues without constant supervision.
  • Reliability & Flexibility: Punctual, reliable, and willing to adapt to varying workloads. Occasional overtime may be required to meet deadlines.

Note: While experience is key, candidates with transferable skills from roles requiring high levels of organisation and responsibility—such as in retail management, administration, or even specialised logistics like a Mortuary Porter (requiring meticulous tracking and handling protocols)—are encouraged to apply. We value a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn.
