  • Material Handling & Segregation: Manually handle, load, and transport waste materials (timber, metal, plasterboard, rubble). Correctly segregate materials for recycling, reuse, or disposal in line with site waste management plans.
  • Site Preparation & Support: Assist in setting up exclusion zones, erecting safety signage, and supporting the site team with general labouring duties to ensure the smooth running of the demolition phase.

  • Health & Safety Compliance: Maintain the highest standards of site safety. Conduct dynamic risk assessments, use all provided PPE correctly, and adhere strictly to method statements and risk assessments (RAMS). Report any hazards or near misses immediately.
  • Clearing & Cleaning: Ensure work areas are kept clean, tidy, and free from trip hazards. Perform end-of-day sweeps and ensure all tools and equipment are stored securely.

What We're Looking For: Candidate Requirements

Frequently Asked Questions (Demolition Jobs Edinburgh)

For most labouring roles, basic hand tools (claw hammer, bolster chisel, wrecking bar) are often expected, but this will be specified by the client. All specialist power tools and major equipment are provided by the employer. Essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as a hard hat, hi-vis vest, steel-toe-capped boots, and safety glasses are your responsibility and a mandatory requirement for any site. Some clients may provide task-specific PPE like gloves, dust masks, or ear defenders. Always confirm requirements during your briefing with HireNow.

Standard shifts are typically Monday to Friday, 7:30/8:00 AM to 4:30/5:00 PM, with a 30-minute lunch break. However, to meet project deadlines, overtime is frequently available, including early starts, late finishes, and weekend work, often at enhanced pay rates. Some larger commercial projects in the city centre may operate staggered shifts or night works to minimise disruption. Your flexibility to work overtime can significantly increase your weekly earnings. HireNow will always provide clear shift details before you accept a placement.

Yes, absolutely. A valid CSCS Green Card demonstrates your fundamental understanding of site safety, which is the most critical requirement. We work with clients who have openings for entry-level operatives where you will be paired with experienced crews. Your general construction labouring experience, physical fitness, and positive attitude are key. This is an excellent way to gain specific demolition experience and progress your career. We also recommend checking our general Looking For Work page for a broader view of entry-point opportunities across sectors.

As a specialist recruitment agency, HireNow acts as your advocate and single point of contact with multiple employers. Instead of applying to one company at a time, registering with us gives you access to our entire network of vetted clients across Edinburgh and Central Scotland. We handle payroll, timesheets, and contractual admin. More importantly, we understand the local market intricacies. For employers seeking talent, our process is equally efficient, as detailed in our resource for businesses Looking For Staff. This dual expertise ensures better matches for both workers and companies.

The demolition and construction industry offers clear progression paths. Starting as a Labourer, you can advance to a Skilled Operative with certifications in plant operation (e.g., CPCS for 360° excavators, dumpers, or crushers). From there, roles like Demolition Supervisor (SSSTS/SMSTS qualified) or Site Manager are achievable. Many firms also value experienced operatives in asbestos removal (licensed), concrete cutting/bursting, or structural dismantling. HireNow supports progression by connecting you with clients who invest in training and by highlighting upskilling opportunities.
